Aren’t you tired of loosing files? I know I am.

I think that when people first embraced the internet they didn’t think it was going to turn into a host for viruses, trojans, and who knows what other elements wreck havoc on your computers these days. In the initial days of email and web surfing people started seeing malignent emails arriving in their in bins and one click later, it was disaster. Solution companies like Norton, Symantec, TrendMicro soon came to the rescue and for $XX.95 you were protected. And this was good if not for the emergence of companies that claimed to be internet security protection, when in fact, they were the new face of "spyware." "Yeah, we’ll fix your computer from the ‘other bugs’, but now we track you."

Since those days, I like most people have armed myself with virus software and spy filters galore. I have a full internet security suite to ensure that if nothing else, I don’t pretend that anything could go wrong. So then why was I still worried? Well if you’ve ever had your computer crash on the count of any one of those attacks, you would soon know what a complete waste of time your next few moments in life would be. You freeze in your chair wondering just how bad the damage is, and thoughts begin to creep into your head. "Oh my God, I’ve got this file and that file and that file, in there." So after stressing out a bit, I decided that:

 1) I had had enough, and
 2) technology had evolved enough that I could probably do something about it.

So I decided to start looking into a solution. A real solution. First I knew that a reality check indicated that I would always have to have concerns for my computer, regardless of internet threats. It may crash, burn, soak, or just plain stop. Also, I had to consider the remoteness of it all because any eventual crash of any type will require the re-installation of software. And of course, reloads of the internet protection solutions. But what was most troubling was always having to haul my files around and the programs that came with it. These days people carry around boxes of pictures of their loved ones and boxes of software everytime they move.

After some deliberation I decided that it was time that my materials went online, permanently. What if my computer was no longer that, a computer, and instead just a window to my computer needs? I knew there were companies that hosted domains and websites and offered file storage on their servers, but I did not know that some of those companies provided more than just complex data storage for IT persons.

loosing internet filesThese companies will allow you to open an account (most of which are free for a trial period) and upload your files. All of them. Video, photos, documents, and even your iTunes music collection. What is amazing is that most of these companies have standardized the protocols of communication between them and in doing so, have designed built in control panels that allow you to log in to your account from any computer anywhere; find your file and launch and launch it using an online version of the most popular programs and viewers. And just like that, you have an open letter, a functional spreadsheet, a zoomed in picture, or a video playing just as if it had been sitting on your C: drive. Even though companies said this was possible in the early days of the internet, I think price and evolution were at odds with them back then.

While everyone is excited about the new phone that walks the dog and also takes the kids to school, I am just glad I don’t have to install or carry software around anymore. Just give me access to an internet browser, and that’s my PC.
